Abstract

1430331 Scissors and shears J WISS & SONS CO 30 April 1974 [12 July 1973] 18830/74 Heading B4B A scissors or shears comprises a lower blade 3 rigidly connected to a handle 4, an upper blade 2 connected by linkage means to a handle 5 which is spaced from the lower blade by a bush 15 through which passes a pivot means 11, e.g. a bolt, the linkage means comprising a lug 6 on the upper blade engaging an abutment 7a, 7b, 7c, Fig. 1, on the handle 5 so as to pivot the blade when the handle 5 is actuated, a torsion spring 13 being provided which during such movement of the blade 2 causes the latter to be biased inwardly towards the blade 3 during cutting. As shown in Fig. 5, the blade 3 is formed with a recess 14 for locating one end 13b of the torsion spring, the other end 13a of the spring engaging with the lug 6 on the blade 2. The bush 15 is made of a low friction material, e.g. polyethylene, which prevents binding of the spring. The pivot is in the form of a nut-andbolt device 11, 12 such that the scissors can be easily dismantled for, e.g. sharpening. The blades are retained in the closed position by means of a locking member 5c, e.g. of plastics material. In the construction of garden shears shown in Figs. 7 and 10, the handle 25 is connected to blade 22 by means of a lug 26 fitting into a slot 27 in the handle 25; the spring 33 is located within a bush 35. The blades are retained in a closed position by means of a lever 40 engaging a projection 41 on the handle 25 and a resilient bumper 42 is secured to the handle 23. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the handle 5 is formed with a projection (51) adapted to engage with an aperture (50) provided in the lug 6 on the blade 2.
