Abstract
1430214 Measuring corrosion COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 10 July 1973 30424/73 Heading G1N Corrosion of a metal test piece by an aqueous solution is determined by immersing an electrode in the solution to form an electro-chemical cell with the test piece; measuring the e.m.f. E of the cell, the short circuit current ice supplied and the electrolyte resistance Re 1 between the test piece and electrode; deducing the electrode polarization resistance R pol from R pol = (E/i cc )-Rel; and determining the maximum value of the intensity of the current supplied from i max = Eo/R pol which current represents the rate of corrosion of the metal test piece by the electrolyte. The current, voltage and resistance are measured using a milliameter, voltmeter and Wheatstone bridge. Probe constructions; one suitable for measuring the corrosion of a metal wall comprises a casing having disposed therein a metal planar electrode to one surface of which air or oxygen is supplied and the opposite surface of which is arranged in spaced parallel relationship with the wall. In another arrangement a corrosion cell for immersing in a flow of liquid includes a housing having the electrode mounted in spaced parallel relationship with a piece of metal to be tested. Interchangeable wedges are provided for varying the distance between the electrode and test object. The cell may form part of a liquid conduit in which case the electrode is cylindrical and the test piece is positioned along the axis of the tube. The electrode may be Ag/AgO or Hg/Hg Cl.
