1430153 Dispenser for wound material M GRANGER and A LEROND 3 April 1973 [27 April 1972 16 Aug 1972 26 Dec 1972] 15981/73 Heading B8M A device for dispensing and severing wound material from a roll comprises a roll carrier, a drum frictionally driven by contact with the material when a free end of the latter is pulled from a roll supported by the roll carrier, a severing device for severing the material at a cutting location and means for causing the resultant free end of the material to advance to said cutting location due to movement of the drum. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, a roll R of web material is supported on a pivot carried by a pivoted arm 17, and material from the roll passes over a drum 8 and out via an opening 3a in a cover 3. The roll support may be a rod carried by a pivoted arm, or a rod slidably supported at its ends in vertical guides, or a pair of roll centres and the arrangement may be such that the rod 1 can only be supported one way round. The severing device comprises a knife blade 9 carried by the drum 8 and a fixed counter-blade 12 mounted obliquely in the apparatus. The device may cut the whole or part of the web width. Alternatively the movable knife is carried by a pair of arms pivoted coaxially with the drum and rotated therefrom via transmission means. The length of web cut may be varied in the case where the blade is carried by the drum by withdrawing the counterblade at regular intervals. In Fig. 13 the counterblade is carried by a pair of pivoted arms 33 carying a block 38, and the drum axis carries a toothed wheel 35 engaging a toothed wheel 36 provided with a roller 37 which engages the block 38 to withdraw the counterblade on every alternate revolution of the drum. Different gear ratios may be used. In the case where the movable blade is separate from the drum the transmission connecting the two may be variable, e.g. using variable diameter pulleys or inverted cones connected by a belt. In either case means may be provided for raising the counterblade manually to permit the withdrawal of an arbitrary length of material. The means for moving the drum to position the free end of the material may comprise an elastic band 20, Fig. 3, connected to a point on the arm 17 and to a peg 21 on an arm 22 fixed to the drum axis in such a position that the band brakes the drum during cutting of the web and accelerates the drum immediately thereafter. The band urges the blade 9 against a stop 23a in the inoperative position. Means for preventing withdrawal of more than one length of material at a time may comprise a slidable finger 81, Fig. 25, which engages a stop 84a on one end of the drum. The finger is moved by pressure on a push-button 85 to permit the drum to be turned by a handle, but is returned to its blocking position by a cam 87 as the drum rotates. Alternatively the drum carries a pivoted member 89, Fig. 30, which, when the drum is rotated is urged to a position in which it engages a projection on a spring loaded plate 98 so that the latter brakes the drum. The drum may have a friction increasing surface and/or may carry a pad engageable with a fixed ink pad for printing the web as it is discharged. The drum may be motor driven. The pivoted arm 17, Fig. 3, may carry marks on a member 25 visible through a window 26 in the cover 3 to indicate when the roll R is almost used up.
