1429753 Travelling cylinder machine SHELDON INDUSTRIES Inc 13 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 21009/74 Heading B6C Printing apparatus, wherein a base supporting a carrier provided with raised indicia is moved relative to a plurality of impression rollers, is characterized by the provision of a projecting rail which is raised above the carrier surface but not as much as the indicia, and which cooperates with the impression rollers to prevent the sheets being printed from being pressed against areas of the carrier not provided with indicia. The invention is particularly applicable where manifold sets of sheets using carbon or carbonless papers are being printed, to prevent smudging. In an embodiment, Fig. 3, base 14 supports a printing plate 10 and a credit card 11, Fig. 7. which may have raised indicia of varying heights; this base is pulled through a stationary housing 23 in which are mounted upper, impression rollers 15, 16 and lower, support rollers 24, 25. The upper rollers are staggered, the impression surfaces 15a, 16a tapering towards trunnions 38, 41 mounted in guide shoulders 36, 37, 39, 40 in side walls 35, the other end of each roller having a similar trunnion. The mid-portions 15b, 16b of each roller are supported on longitudinal rail 18 which prevents the sheet stack 13 from receiving too much pressure in the non-printing areas, also Fig. 9 (not shown). The guides for the roller trunnions are angled to bias the rollers into contact with the stack 13. A transparent flap 55 may be interposed between the rollers and the stack.
