1429615 Grinding TOYODA-KOKI KK 4 Feb 1974 [23 March 1973] 04990/74 Heading B3D Apparatus for grinding a flat surface on a workpiece W comprises a bed 1 for holding the workpiece and having horizontal hydrostatic slide surfaces 1a, 1b a tool head 3 mounted on the slide surfaces for translatory movement in a horizontal circular path, means for moving the tool head in the path, a ram 25 vertically slidable in the tool head and rotatably supporting a shaft 32 provided with a cup-shaped grinding wheel 34 at its lower end, means 42 for angularly adjusting the shaft relative to the workpiece surface in a vertical plane, means 36 for rotating the shaft, and means for vertically moving the ram to effect infeed of the grinding wheel. A transfer device 2 is provided on the bed 1 for positioning the workpiece. The hydrostatic slide surfaces 1a, 1b co-operate with pockets 3a, 3b in the tool head for permitting horizontal movement thereof. Each surface 1a, 1b rotatably supports shafts 21, 22 eccentrically mounted on circular plates 19, 20 on drive shafts 17, 18. Each drive shaft is connected by worm gearing in blocks 7, 8 and by chains 15, 16 to a shaft 5 rotated in bearings 4 in the tool head by a motor 6 whereby the tool head is moved in a horizontal circular path. A head 23 is mounted on the tool head 3 and slidably receives a pair of vertical guide rods 24 secured to a support plate 35 for the ram 25. A rack on the ram is engaged by a pinion 28 driven by a wheel 27 and worm 26 from a motor to effect vertical movement of the ram. The ram 25 has an adjusting sleeve 29 which is held against rotation relative to the ram and is supported at its lower end by a spherical bearing 30 and at its upper end by a sleeve 39 having a spherical surface engaged by four members 40 adjustable by screws 42 in a sleeve 38 in the ram. The sleeve 29 rotatably supports the shaft 31 of the cupshaped grinding wheel 34 which is rotated by a motor 36 connected by a flexible coupling 37 to the shaft 31. Adjustment of the members 40 by the screws 42 laterally adjusts the sleeve 39 and thus the inclination of the wheel shaft 31 so as to be perpendicular to the surface of the workpiece which is ground by the orbital movement of the wheel as the ram is lowered by the motor driving worm 26.
