Abstract
1429463 Cyclic particle accelerators; superconductive magnets ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd 14 Feb 1974 [19 June 1973] 6847/74 Headings H1D and H1P The magnetic field of an isochronous cyclotron is provided by air-cored superconducting coils 13A, 13B, 14A, 14B, e.g. of NbTi in the form of fine filaments, embedded in copper, twisted for stabilization against eddy currents, and with stainless steel ribbon wound in to keep the hoop stress below the yield point. Cryostat tanks 11 and 12 house the coils, and normal trim coils 22A, 22B are also provided to permit adjustment to the isochronous condition. The acceleration region, introduction of ions into which, and extraction of ions from which, is effected via passages 22 and 23, respectively, is defined by 8 pairs of sector-shaped plates, Fig. 2, of which alternate pairs are earthed and provided with iron polepieces 21A, 21B, each having one curved edge 26, Fig. 2, to provide axial focusing, and encased in conductive material to shield them from h.f. The two remaining pairs of plates are connected to quarter wave resonators 17A and 17B, respectively, containing movable tuning shorts 18A and 18B. 'The input beam orbits inwardly, Fig. 2, to strike stripper foil 23 positioned on a movable carriage, whereafter the ions orbit outwardly to be extracted by electrostatic deflectors 25.
