Abstract

1429289 Optical transponder STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 1 Nov 1967 49753/67 Heading G1A In an optical transponder the interrogating signals are focused on to a photo-detector 3 Fig. 1 and the laser 4 is modulated if the correct interrogating signals are recognized. The interrogating signals are focused by lenses 1, 2 and fully-silvered mirror 5 reflects the laser beam through lens 1 at a small angle to the optical axis of the detection arrangement. The laser and detector are mounted in the housing 23 Fig. 2, horizontally pivoted at bearings 24. The housing and bearings are both rotatable about a vertical axis by a motor 26. Elevational scanning is effected by a worm gear 36 through the cam 39 and follower 40. Cooling is effected by Peltier devices. Optical indication of interrogation is provided by a persistent phosphor display device calibrated in accordance with the axis of the vehicle carrying the transponder; the phosphors are subjected via a light fibre to a light pulse positioned in correspondence with the direction of the interrogating signal. The laser may be gallium arsenide.
