Abstract

1429271 Feeding webs E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 23 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 9042/73 Heading B8R [Also in Divisions G1 D1 and G3] The tension in a rope R, yarn Y, web or similar flexible material is sensed by guiding the material around at least one guide on a member 28 or 102 which is movable angularly about a pivot axis which passes through the path of the material, the or each guide being between the pivot axis and the single end of the member 28 or 102, the movement of the member 28 or 102 being sensed either pneumatically (as in Fig. 1) or photo-electrically (as in Fig. 3) and a signal applied to a device for regulating the tension in the material thus maintaining it at a desired preset value. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a rope R passes around a guide roller 24 and through guide eyelets 34 (only one shown) in a beam 28 pivotable about flexure pivots 30 at one end of the beam, a bellows 40 exerting a preset pneumatic force (corresponding to a desired tension) on the other end of the beam. A bolt 54 and nuts 58, 58<SP>1</SP> limit movement of the beam relative to frame 27. A control valve 60, mounted on the frame and provided with a zero-point adjusting screw 62, is supplied with air on line 64, the back pressure on line 64 varying with the position of the beam 28, and is coupled to a pneumatic servo unit 20 which controls the angular position of a tension regulating device 10 comprising rods 11, 11<SP>1</SP> around which the rope passes in an S-shaped path. Any deviation of the tension from the desired value is thus automatically corrected by the device 10. An alternative embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4 comprises a feed roller 100 which feeds a yarn Yi, Yo past a guide pin 106 mounted on a beam 102 supported on a knife-edge 104. Variations in tension of the yarn cause the beam to pivot against counterweight 108, and an extension 109 then blocks, to a degree proportionate to the beam movement, the light path between a light source 111 and a photo-cell 112. The output from the photo-cell 112 is fed to a control system 114 linked to a motor 138. The motor 138 controls the rate and direction of rotation of the casing of an A.C. synchronous primary drive motor 120 for the feed roller 100, thereby controlling the speed of the feed roller and maintaining the tension in the yarn Yi, Yo.
