1429173 Pipe-joint coverings BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 11 May 1973 [17 April 1972 (2) 13 Oct 1972] 17564/72 47281/72 and 47282/72 Divided out of 1429173 Heading F2G In laying welded sections of weight coated steel piping under water, the weld 3 is enclosed by a plastics sleeve 6 into which a settable filler material 14 is introduced in a flowable condition. On setting, this forms a locking engagement with part (e.g. 18, 19) of the sleeve. The sleeve may be made of high density polythene, which may be foamed or of a copolymer of alkenes. The filler material consists of an extending filler such as aggregate and a binder, which may be hydraulic cement, unsaturated polyester resin or epoxy resin. After introducing the aggregate by a screw-fed mechanism, so that it travels helically around the pipes, guided by the ribs 11, suction is applied at 12 to saturate the aggregate with binder. The unsaturated polyester binder is rapidly cured in the presence of curing catalysts and promoters and an unsaturated monomer, with which it copolymerizes. The binder is made by esterifying saturated dihydric alcohols or bisphenol A adducts with α unsaturated, α,# dicarboxylic acids. The polyester can be modified by replacing some of the unsaturated dibasic acids with saturated dibasic carboxylic acids.
