1429086 Hair setting PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 2 Oct 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 45974/ 73 Heading D1P A process for deforming hair comprises wetting the hair with an aqueous solution from 1% to 20% by weight of an alkali metal monopersulphate oxidant, at a pH of not less than 5, subjecting the moist treated hair to a longitudinal stress, and thereafter drying the hair in the stressed configuration. The longitudinal stress may be achieved by winding the wet hair on a mandrel (e.g. a spiral rod or a Croquignole curler), by winding the hair loosely into pin curls, or by forming it into a straight configuration, e.g. by brushing. Preferably the hair is in contact with the oxidant for 1-30 minutes, after which the latter is removed by rinsing with water-preferably deionised water to prevent a build up of Ca and Mg ions on the hair-or by shampooing. The hair-deforming compositions, which may comprise separately packaged portions of oxidant and a shampoo composition comprising a non- cationic surfactant and water, preferably have a pH in the range of 7.0 to 9.5 and which may be maintained by a buffer. The preferred buffer comprises 0.5 to 10% by weight each of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate. Further components of the composition comprise thickeners, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose, high molecular weight polyoxyethylenes, MgAl silicate and silica gel. The process may be carried out at room temperature or elevated temperatures up to 150‹F, and does not substantially bleach the hair.
