Abstract
142,900. Todman, J. C. Jan. 14, 1919. Electric governors.-The rotary member of an electric regulating apparatus applicable to the engine governor described in Specification 137,898 moves in such a manner as to vary the gap between the poles of an electro-magnet under the influence of changes of current in the magnet winding. A spring-controlled disk 1 of magnetic material has a spiral periphery and, by its rotation, varies the air gap between a double pole 5 and a wound pole 3 of an electro-magnet. The periphery of the disk 1 may have a flange 2. The air gap may be varied by other means; for example, a disk of varying thickness may vary the area of the gap. In a modification, Fig. 4, one pole 9 of the magnet is annular and surrounds the other pole 10, which is of spiral or other form giving a variable air gap. A piece of magnetic material 11 moves from a wider to a narrower part of the gap as the current increases. The air gap may be arranged to vary less per degree of revolution to give a magnified scale throughout any given range.
