Rail joints; chairs with separate jaws, and securing to sleepers; sleepers, securing rails to.- Rails or fish-plates at rail joints are secured to chair plates by means of polygonal clamping- pieces having concentric upper portions which engage with guide-pieces on the chair plates, and eccentric lower portions to engage with the rail flanges so that the rails can be adjusted for gauge and height. Fig. 2 shows a plan view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section. A chair plate 5 is provided on its upper face with abutments 15 strengthened by stay portions 16, 17 and having guideribs 26 on their inner faces. The abutments are staggered and have the opposing portions 18 of the chair plate thinned off. The under surface is provided with hollow internally flanged projections 6 which fit in recesses in the sleeper. Vertical bolts 9 pass upwards through the projections 6, and nuts 7 hold the chair plate and sleeper together. The under surface of the chair plate has a series of lines of recesses of elliptical shape and staggered to grip the surface of the sleeper. The rail A is held in position by means of clamping-blocks 24 which are held down by hollow shanked nuts 33 engaging with the upper portions of the vertical bolts 9. The clamping- blocks are polygonal in form, the upper larger portion being concentric with the bolt and adapted to engage with the ribs 26 on the abutments. The lower portion of the blocks is eccentric and is correspondingly shaped to the upper portion, so that one face can be brought to bear against the edge of the flange of the rail or fish-plate. By changing the positions of the clamping-blocks, the gauge of the rails can be adjusted, and when the height of the rail has to be altered, the clamping-blocks can be loosened and a shim 34 placed under the rail.
