Abstract

1428380 Dyeing polyester cellulosic unions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 July 1973 [2 Aug 1972] 36021/72 Heading D1B Unions of aromatic polyester and cellulosic materials are dyed in a continuous process by impregnating, e.g. padding, or printing with (a) an alkali metal salt of a disperse dyestuff which contains at least one carboxylic acid, hydroxyaryl, sulphamoylaryl or tautomeric keto-enol group but which is free from sulphonic acid groups and acidifying and (b) a water-soluble cellulose reactive dye, acid to reduce the pH to below 7 and an organic cyclic carbonate, steaming or baking the union to fix the dyestuffs and finally rinsing in an aqueous alkali solution. The disperse dye may be applied before or after the reactive dye or both dyes may be applied together. In the latter embodiment, the material is padded with liquor containing the alkali metal salt of the disperse dye, the reactive dye and organic cyclic carbonate, excess liquor is removed, the pad acidified to below pH 7 using an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic acid and after optionally drying the dyes are fixed by steam or dry heat. The final alkali rinse may contain a surfactant. The acidification and fixation stages may be combined by fixing the padded union in steam containing the vapour of a volatile organic acid. The acidification stage may be omitted if the pad or print paste contains an acid generator.
