Abstract

1428025 Detecting fingerprints UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 20 March 1974 [30 March 1973 17 Oct 1973] 15513/73 and 48464/73 Heading G1B Fingerprints on a surface are rendered visible by application of a solution comprising a reagent which reacts with urea to form a coloured compound, e.g. an aldehyde of the structure X-A-(CY=CY# n CHO, wherein A is phenyl, a poly nuclear aromatic or a heterocyclic, X is an auxochrome, each Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro group and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3. The preferred reagent is 4-dimethyl-amino-cinnamaldehyde, such reagents being applied in the presence of a strong acid. Application is preferably in the form of a solution in a low polarity, inert, non-aqueous liquid, e.g. a fluorinated hydrocarbon and ethanol or a propanal, or in the form of two such solutions, the first applied containing the acid and the second the reagent.
