Abstract

1427696 Deferred action cells CATALYST RESEARCH CORP 12 May 1959 16334/59 Heading H1B A heat-activated deferred action electrolytic cell has one electrode formed from a thin rectangular metal blank folded double and sealed along two edges to form a flat rectangular receptacle with an open end, the other electrode being a flat metal blank fitted inside the receptacle; a solid electrolyte separates the electrodes. Fig. 1 shows a Ni blank whose extension 12 is covered with Ca; parts 10, 11 form the receptacle of one cell and part 12 forms the enclosed anode of an adjacent cell, Fig. 8. Parts 10, 11 are folded at 18 around an anode, their edges 19 are crimped or welded and then folded, and part 12 is bent over. Fig. 8 shows a cell with a Ca-Ni anode 22, electrolyte pads 30, a depolarizer 17 held on a grid 16, felt insulators 36, 38 and a Ni cathode 10, 11. Fig. 9 shows a battery of cells in a sealed Fe or steel case lined with asbestos 62 and felt 64 or with glass fibre cloth and mica and containing also heating pads 38, powder trains 70 and an electric igniter 74. Suitable materials are; for electrodes, Ni or Ni alloy and Ca; Mg and Cu; Fe, or Pt; Ca and Ag; for electrolyte, LiOH, KOH, LiOH+KNO 3 , LiOH + LiCl, LiCl + KCl; electrolyte carrier, metal oxides, ceramics, glass fibre, asbestos; depolarizers, K 2 Cr 2 O 7 , K 2 CrO 4 , MoO 3 , WO 3 , CaCrO 4 + PhCrO 4 ; heat source, metal powder, e.g. Zr, Ni, Al, + metal chlorates, perchlorates, nitrates, chromates, Fe 2 O 3 , MgO 2 +filler, e.g. diatomaceous earth.
