Abstract

1427637 Cutting out IC engine cylinders ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 29 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972 18 April 1973 10 Aug 1973] 40662/73 Heading F1B An I.C. engine includes a protective device for thermal and/or catalytic reactors 21, 22 in its exhaust system 20, the device comprising at least one sensor 26-29 to respond directly or indirectly to operating conditions in a cylinder or group of cylinders and means 25 responsive to the sensors to shut-off fuel or fuel/air mixture to a cylinder or group of cylinders when combustion conditions would otherwise cause an inadmissible temperature to be reached in the exhaust system. When either of sensors 23, 24 senses a reactor temperature higher than a predetermined value, the control device 25 produces a signal to open one of the switches 16-19 to cut off fuel supplied to whichever intake pipe 3-6 corresponds with the cylinder or outlet pipe 30-33 at which the lowest temperature is detected by sensors 26-29. Normally open, which, when closed, short circuit the winding of one of the injection valves 7-10 may replace the normally closed switches 16-19. Semi-conductor switches may be used instead of mechanical ones. The temperature sensors 26-29 may be located in the cylinder head or pressure sensors may be provided for each cylinder to determine whether combustion has taken place. Alternatively, the ignition current can be detected. Instead of controlling fuel supply to injection valves 7-10, control flaps may be located in intake pipes 3-6, that flap being closed by the device 25 which is in the pipe leading to the malfunctioning cylinder. A valve admits air when the flap is closed to avoid high cylinder vacuum causing loss of power. For an engine with multiple carburetters, the fuel supply to the float chamber or the mixture supply to a cylinder or group of cylinders may be interrupted. When the engine is driven by the vehicle to which it is fitted, the fuel is shut-off only after a time delay determined by operation of a bi-metal relay. Fuel supply is resumed when the engine speed falls below a pre-set value. A deactuation temperature sensor 40 prevents the device 25 from operating below a predetermined minimum temperature to allow normal starting of the engine. The sensor or sensors 40 may be in, on or in the vicinity of the engine or in its exhaust system or in more than one of these places. Alternatively one or more of sensors 23, 24, 26- 29 or sensors in the engine oil, cooling water or cooling air may be used. A delay switching device 44 may be provided which is actuated simultaneously with starter motor 43 and, for a predetermined time, prevents the device 25 from interrupting fuel supply. The fuel supply shut-off may operate only for a fixed time and then fuel supply is resumed until further misfiring occurs. This may be effected by monostable trigger stages 50-53, which cause switches 16-19 to be opened until the trigger stage returns to its stable state.
