Abstract

1427366 Injection moulding ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 5 March 1974 [9 March 1973] 11628/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] In a method of sealing an intercell connector 15 into an intercell partition 10 of a multicell electric storage battery, a connector bar 15 of rectangular section having a pair of flanges 16, 17 is inserted into a notch 11 in the partition 10 leaving a clearance (20) around the bar but with the flanges 16, 17 overlying the margins of the lower part of the notch, a mould member 25 (Fig. 6) is placed over the upper part of the notch affording a cavity of which the thickness, over an area 31 extending beyond the sides of the notch, exceeds that of the partition, so that when a plastics material is injected into the mould it fills the U-shaped clearance space (20) bounded by the bar 15 and the flanges 16, 17 and the margins of the lower part of the notch, and fills the upper part of the notch with a filling 40 which forms a tongue-and-groove joint 42 between the edges of the notch and the injected material. Fig. 4c shows the moulded portion 40, 41 as it would appear if it could be removed from the finished intercell connection. Fig. 6 shows the mould member 25 partly cut away. Chamfered edges 29, 30 on the mould member guide it into position. The material of the partition 10 and the material injected may be polypropylene.
