Abstract
1427201 Rodent habitat METAFRAME CORP 5 June 1973 26903/73 Heading AIM A rodent enclosure comprises a primary housing 100 constructed of rigid transparent thermoplastic with an open bottom portion across which is attached a screen 124. The bottom edges of the primary housing fit detachably into a shallow tray 126 which catches waste material and may have elongate raised ribs to support the screen 124. The housing has tapered sides 102, 104, 106, 108 and a top with a concave section 112 which has an opening giving an animal access via tubes 200 to a housing 168 and an opening 154 for a feeding bottle 164. Adjacent the concavity the primary housing 100 is provided with an open top section 118 across which may be connected a perforated metallic plate 120, permitting ready access to the housing 100 when the said plate is removed. Another embodiment of the primary housing 100 comprises a generally L-shaped access opening being closable such as by means of a conformingly L-shaped perforated metal door. A number of housings may be joined in any desired arrangement by hollow, transparent cylindrical tubes 138, 200 and similar inner tubes all having internal, annular ribs aiding the animal in climbing along the tubes. The tubes press-fit into apertures 154, in the side walls or top of the housings. The tubes 200 leading from the opening 154 in the primary housing 100 are arranged telescopically so that when the sub-housing 168, to which they give the animal access, is in the lowered position it is accommodated within the concavity 112, for ease of storage &c and a rodent in the subhousing 168 is temporarily trapped therein by the screen 124 when cleaning of the primary housing is necessary. When not in use the apertures may be closed by means of metal plates 174 having ventilation holes. The tubes are interconnected through the intermediary of elastomeric coupling sleeves 216 and T-shaped coupling members 272 in conjunction with the coupling sleeves can be used where three tubes 200 meet. The tubes 200 consist of two semi-annular mating portions, to facilitate cleaning.
