Abstract

1427070 Iron or steel powder composition HOGANAS AB 16 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 18277/73 Headings C7A and C7D Phosphorus-containing iron or steel powder is produced by mixing phosphorus-free iron or steel having a maximum particle size of 500Ám with an iron-phosphorus alloy containing 14 to 16% phosphorus and of maximum size 75Ám, the resulting mixture containing 0.2 to 3% P. The P-free powder is typically sponge iron, but may be a steel containing nickel and molybdenum; 2% copper may also be incorporated in the mixture as well as a pressing lubricant, e.g. up to 1.5% zinc stearate and 0.005 to 0.02% mineral oil to prevent segregation. The powder can be sintered to make precision components while causing little wear to the pressing tool; a pre-sinter at 650-900‹C followed by gentle comminution may be incorporated prior to pressing. In one embodiment, the ironphosphorus powder is mixed with a proportion of the P-free powder, pre-sintered comminuted and mixed with the remainder of the P-free powder.
