Abstract
1426958 Casting composite articles; jointing SOC DES ELECTRODES ET REFRACTAIRES "SAVOIE" 15 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12504/73 Headings B3F and B3V A method of embedding a metal bar 2 in a carbon block 1 comprises arranging the bar in a longitudinal groove 3 formed in the block, preheating the block and the bar, and casting metal into the groove around the bar, a longitudinal compressive stress being applied to the block before casting and being maintained for at least part of the cooling period. The compressive force F is applied to zones 7 of the block and is at least equal to the tensile strength of the block material. The metal cast may be cast iron and the carbon block may be formed from graphite or calcined anthracite, the metal being poured at a temperature between 1380‹ and 1450‹ C., the bar being preheated to between 400‹ and 500‹ C. and the block to between 200‹ and 300‹ C. at its top and to between 30‹ and 60‹ C. at its bottom. The blocks may be used as the cathode of an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminium.
