Abstract

1426928 Mixing apparatus C H HEISE 11 June 1973 [10 June 19721 27586/73 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions C3, E1 and F4] In a method and apparatus for preparing a road surfacing composition, a plurality of batches of various grain size ranges of aggregate are separately metered, dried, heated and separated into a course fraction, a sand fraction and a "self-filler" fraction; each sand fraction is then returned to the course fraction from which it was separated, the self-filler fractions are combined, and the coarse and sand fractions are then mixed together with the mixer self-filler fraction and a binding agent. As shown in Fig. 1 six batches of aggregate 1 of diverse grain size ranges are each associated with a metering, drying, heating and classifying unit 2 having a classifier 7. Coarse and sand fractions are discharged to a conveyer 5 and thence to a bin 6, and self-filler fractions to a hopper 9, weigher 11 and bin 12, optionally with additional filler 10. Coarse aggregate, filler and bitumen (from a supply 13) are then mixed at 14. The metering, drying, heating and classifying unit 2, Fig. 2, comprises a hopper 16 delivering via a metering screw 17 and hollow feed screw 19 to the interior of a rotatable drying drum heated by a burner 24. Fines are entrained at 33 by the current of heating gas and conveyed through the hollow screw 19 and duct 29 to a first separating stage 22 where sand is precipitated at 35 on to the outer surface of the drum 18 which is provided with a conveying screw 25. Course aggregate and sand are thus delivered to an elevator 20 in the buckets of which they are mixed, and discharged to a hopper 3. The self-filler fraction which has been separated from the sand at 36 is precipitated by the second classifying stage 23 into a screw conveyer 27 which combines all the self-filler fractions and delivers them to the hopper 9, Fig. 1.
