Abstract
1426702 Stripline microwave filters R MINET J DEBEAU and E L THEPAULT 20 Feb 1974 7828/74 Heading H1W A superconductive stripline filter is provided with remotely-adjustable dielectric tuning pads such that the filter can be tuned whilst inside a cryostat. The stripline is of the balanced or sandwiched" " type comprising two symmetrically arranged ground planes. The invention is applicable in particular to the filter described in Specification 1,421,311. As shown a line conductor pattern 89 made of lead is arranged between dielectric plates 59, 80, of, e.g. PTFE, which are, in turn, surrounded by ground plates 57, 58 of, e.g. lead or niobium. The filter is enclosed in a casing 51, 52, 83, 84 of aluminium and plates 55, 56 of a material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, e.g. Invar (a Registered Trade Mark), are inserted between the casing and the ground plates. The filter configuration consists of a main transmission line and three evenly spaced half-wave resonant stubs attached to the main line at their approximate mid points. Dielectric tuning pads 36, 38, 37, 39, 43, 44 are associated with either end of each of the stubs and are arranged to slide in grooves provided in the dielectric plates 59, 80. A mechanism for remotely operating the pads, consisting of lead screws and sliding cross-heads, is described in detail (Figs. 4, 6, not shown). The lead screws and input/output coaxial line are brought out through the closure of the cryostat. Each screw is provided with an adjusting button and a rev. counter. The cryostat is charged with liquid helium which is confined to an annular cylinder surrounding an inner space for the filter. In a modified version of the filter circuit, resonant sections L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 spaced by capacitive gaps S 1 , S 2 , S 3 , S 4 , Fig. 2, are used. The line is arranged in a rectangular U-configuration so that the input and output are at the same end of the filter assembly.
