Abstract

1426674 Film splicing Y TAKAHASHI 16 May 1974 [2 June 1973 (2)] 21925/74 Heading G2E A piece of film-splicing tape 17 is laid adhesive face downwards on a rectangular sheet of protective paper 14 having apertures 9 at the corners, the paper having sprocket holes 21 across its width which are aligned with corresponding sprocket holes 8 in the tape. Fig. 2 shows the piece of tape and protective paper ready for use in the splicer of Fig. 1. This comprises a base 3 with a handle 5 pivoted thereto. Attached to the handle is a raised two-part structure, the rear part carrying a cutter blade 6 and a folded-over member 12. The front part consists of a spring member 10 having a pressure pad 11 and a slit 18 aligned with the cutter 6. The base 3 has a raised support 16, a series of locating pegs 4a-4f, an opening 13, and a further pair of locating pegs 7. Initially the two film strips to be joined are laid end to end, positioned by their perforations on pegs 4a, 4b. Handle 5 is pivoted downwards, so that blade 6 is forced through slit 18 and trims the ends of the strips. These are then removed and the tape and paper assembly placed on the base, tape lowermost, with the apertures 9 at one end engaged over pegs 7 and the other end lying on support (6) Fig. 6, (not shown). The sprocket holes 21, 8 are now engaged over pegs 4c-4f. Over this assembly are laid the film strips with their cut ends abutting, again positioned by their perforations on pegs 4c-4f. The free end of the protective paper resting on support 6 is folded back over the film strip ends and the two apertures 9 at the other end also engaged over pegs 7 position of Fig. 8 (not shown). Handle 5 is pivoted down once again, ending in the position of Fig. 9, with rib member 12 driven through opening 13. This forces the paper strip 14 down into opening 13, and since both ends of the strip are now firmly anchored on pegs 7, the paper splits along its fold, and is pulled away from the tape. This is now left folded round both sides of the film joint, with its adhesive face in contact therewith, firmly held by the pressure on pad 11.
