Abstract
1426222 Electrodepositable coating compositions SHINTO PAINT CO Ltd 15 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 23146/73 Heading C3B A coating composition comprises a watersoluble organic or inorganic acid, water and a resin obtained by reacting a copolymer of 5-50% of ethylenically unsaturated monomer units containing epoxy groups and 50-95% of acrylic or vinyl monomer units not containing epoxy groups with 0À1 to 1 equivalent of a secondary amine per equivalent of epoxy groups in the copolymer. The composition may also contain a water miscible organic solvent as well as pigments and fillers. In examples the copolymer is prepared in a water miscible solvent, reacted with the amine and water and acid are then added to the polymer solution. Copolymers prepared are those of glycidyl methacrylate with: hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexylacrylate and styrene; methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate; styrene methyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or ethyl acrylate; 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate, styrene, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate. The solvents in which they were prepared were isopropyl alcohol or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst and the amines used were di-N-propylamine, diisopropanolamine, piperidine, N-methyl-ethanolamine, morpholine or diethanolamine. The resin solution was compounded with water and as acid acetic acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, malonic acid, formic acid or propionic acid and optionally titanium oxide. The compositions are particularly useful for coating metals by cathodic electrodeposition.
