Abstract

1426084 Drying webs BELOIT CORP 21 June 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 29516/73 Heading F4G A press mechanism for removing liquid from a travelling fibrous web W comprises an extended press nip through which the web W passes and a means for absorbing moisture squeezed from the web and for retarding the flow of moisture back to the web on the web passing from the nip. The means comprises a thin porous sheet S contiguous with the web W in the nip and backed by a porous felt F. The sheet S may be of a porous stainless steel or of a plastics material. Alternatively the means may comprise a felt having a "flowresistance" property. As shown the nip is formed between a pair of belts 10, 11 and extends from a first pair of rolls 12, 14 to a second pair of rolls 13, 15. Intermediate the pairs of rolls a pressure chamber 18, 19 is formed between a pair of bearings 16, 17, the web inlet to and outlet from the chamber being sealed as by sliding members made of Teflon (Registered Trade Mark). The extended nip may formed by pressing the web against an arc of a roll by a belt or by the felt itself (Figs. 3, to 6, not shown). Values of felt permeability and porosity of the sheet S are given in the Specification.
