Abstract

1425670 Purifying mercury BAYER AG 25 Jan 1974 [27 Jan 1973] 03486/74 Headings C7B and C7D The purification of mercury contaminated with iron, chromium, vanadium or other metallic impurities less noble than mercury from the electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides is carried out by treating the impure metal with an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid containing mercury(I) sulphate in solution or suspension, separating the purified mercury from the contaminated solution, washing it and recycling back to the electrolysis cell. Aqueous sulphuric acid and mercury (I) sulphate, from an electrolytic cell 4 (the cementing solution) is passed into a cup 3 and comes into contact with contaminated mercury from the horizontal amalgam decomposer 2 of an alkali metal chloride electrolysis cell 1. The liquids are turbulently mixed by a rotor 5 and the purified mercury passes into a chamber 7 where it is washed with dilute sulphuric acid prior to returning to the cell 1. The spent cementing solution 9 together with the spent anolyte solution 11 are further treated to remove salts by precipitation prior to recycling. Where a vertical amalgam decomposer 14 is used, the contaminated mercury is pumped 15 back to the cell via a mixing zone 16 into which the cementing solution is introduced. The cementing process is preferably carried out at 20-100‹C with 0.1 to 1 molar sulphuric acid, and all the containers should be resistant to the cementing solution.
