Abstract

1425526 Welding by fusion VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY PROEKTNO-KONSTRUKTORSKY I TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT ELEKTROSVAROCHNOGO OBORUDOVANIYA 21 March 1973 13519/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division H5] In plasma-arc welding together metal sheets, e.g. of stainless steel, or aluminium, magnesium or alloys thereof, covered with oxide film, current pulses are alternately applied to a cleaning electrode 2, in a nozzle 9, and a welding electrode 1, in a nozzle 10, the pulses to the electrodes 2, 1 being respectively of reverse and straight polarity and the electrodes and nozzles being so sized that the straight, welding, current density is at least 30% greater than that of the reverse, cleaning, current density. Preferably, the reverse polarity nozzle 9 is fed with argon and the straight polarity nozzle 10 is fed with an argon-helium mixture. For thin sheets with an oxide film thickness of 100- 300 Á, the duration and/or current amplitude of the reverse polarity pulses may be at least 30% greater than these of the straight polarity pulses; and for thick sheets with an oxide film thickness up to 100 Á. the duration and/or current amplitude of the straight polarity pulses may be at least 30% greater than these of the reverse polarity pulses.
