Abstract

1425509 Ball-point pen ink G S LACY [trading as PACIFIC RESEARCH LABORATORY] 2 March 1973 [3 March 1972 29 Jan 1973] 10405/73 Heading C4A [Also in Division C3] A ball-point pen ink composition has an ink component comprising (a) an organic solvent (b) at least one colour ingredient (c) optionally at least one fatty acid which is soluble in the organic solvent and (d) optionally at least one resin which is soluble in the organic solvent and, dispersed in the ink component in an amount effective to reduce the tendency of corrosion products to form when the ink component contacts copper or copper alloy in the presence of air and moisture within a ball-point pen ink cartridge, (e) at least one additive selected from corrosion inhibitors for copper or copper alloy and antioxidants, the additive or additives being soluble in the organic solvent and satisfying the Accelerated Heat Ageing Test and also at least one of the following three tests: the Six- Day Accelerated Corrosion Test, the Accelerated Two-Hour Copper Alloy Weight Loss Test and the Twenty-Four Hour Accelerated Corrosion Test, each test being defined in the Specification. Preferably the additive includes both an antioxidant and a corrosion inhibitor. Preferred corrosion inhibitors are aromatic phosphate amine salts, e.g. diethylamine addition products of octylphenyl acid phosphates, e.g. a mixture of diethylamine salts of bis-(octylphenyl) hydrogen phosphate and octylphenyl dihydrogen phosphate, N,N<SP>1</SP>-disalicylol-1,1-propane diamine, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate and benzotriazoles. Preferred antioxidants are 2,2- methylene bis - (4 - methyl - 6 - tertiarybutylphenol) and 2,2 - methylene - bis - (4 - ethyl - 6- tertiarybutylphenol). Preferred fatty acids are oleic acid, decanoic acid and organic acids, straight chain or branched, C-4 to C-20 in length, preferably saturated and derived from synthetic or natural sources. Preferred resins are coumarone indene, ketone aldehyde condensation, pine tar derived resins and coal tar resins. Preferred organic solvents are polar compounds, e.g. glycerol, benzyl alcohol, ethylene and diethylene glycol and mono- and dialkyl or aryl ethers of ethylene and diethylene glycol. In the examples propylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, benzylene glycol, beta naphthol, phenol modified couramine-indene resin, butylene glycol 1,3, diphenyl guanidine, carbon black dispersion, phenol modified coumarone resin, dipropylene glycol and isostearic acid are also present.
