Abstract

1425481 Treating exhaust gases MONSANTO CO 22 March 1973 13902/73 Heading C1A Nitrogen oxides are removed from automobile exhaust gases which also contain oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and hydrocarbons by contacting the gases at elevated temperatures with a catalyst containing rhodium on a support in an amount of less than 0À05% by weight under conditions which on the average are reducing but where sufficient oxygen is present to keep the ammonia production to no more than 100 p.p.m. but insufficient to prevent at least 90% reduction of the nitrogen oxides. The catalyst suitably contains 0À005 to 0À005% rhodium and may also contain nickel, platinum and halide ions. The support is preferably on a transition alumina and may be in the form of an alumina-coated ceramic. The process is preferably operated at above 600‹ C. and the average amount of oxygen is preferably no greater than 2% by volume. The process is suitable for engines operating with a rich air to fuel ratio. Supplementary air is added to the exhaust gases prior to contact with the catalyst to obtain the required oxygen content, e.g. by impinging a jet of air upon a jet of exhaust gases.
