Abstract

1425479 Helical-scan tape apparatus; guiding record tapes SONY CORP 18 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18689/73 Heading G5R A helical-scan tape apparatus includes a guide drum 2 which is rotated and has at least one groove G1-G3 in the surface thereof in a plane perpendicular to the drum axis, to facilitate the maintenance of an air bearing layer between the tape T and the drum 2. Preferably, the number of grooves is at least three, and as shown their cross-section is V-shaped. In the illustrated embodiment, the rotary heads Ha, Hb are secured to the drum 2 and rotate in a gap 4 between the rotating drum 2 and a lower, fixed drum 3. The drum 3 has a helical tape-edge guide 3a; the drum 2 is driven from a motor 9 at a speed which is servocontrolled by an eddy-current brake 11.
