Abstract

1425397 Cellular films obtained from aqueous latices DESOTO Inc 23 March 1973 [30 March 1972 18 April 1972] 14144/73 Heading C3C Cellular films are made by drying an aqueous latex coating composition comprising an aqueous continuous phase having stably suspended therein polymer particles of an organic solvent-soluble resin, the particles being swollen by having absorbed therein a primary organic liquid which is substantially immiscible with the aqueous phase (i.e. at least half of the primary liquid which is initially placed in the aqueous phase migrates from this phase into the particles) and a secondary organic liquid that is at least partially waterimmiscible in the aqueous phase, which has a lower vapour pressure at ambient temperature than the primary liquid and being less readily absorbed by the polymer than the primary liquid, whereby when the latex is deposited and dried, the organic liquids and water will evaporate to produce a film containing opacityinducing cells. The polymer may be one having a glass transition temperature below 25‹ C., e.g. an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer which may contain a trace of methacrylic acid, together with one having a glass transition temperature above 30‹ C., e.g. polystyrene or styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer. The primary liquid may be an aliphatic hydrocarbon e.g. mineral spirits, naphtha, hexane, butane, kerosene or octyl alcohol, and/or an aromatic liquid, e.g. xylene or toluene, or an alkyl diethylene glycol acetate. The secondary liquid may be propylene glycol. In the examples the latex also included a dispersing agent (an ethylene oxide/isooctyl phenol condensate or sodium lauryl sulphate), a thickener (hydroxyethyl cellulose), an optical brightener, a pigment (TiO 2 ) and sodium bicarbonate.
