Self-serving stores. - In a self-serving store, the aisles 18 between the display cabinets of merchandise holders 17 are divided by Jongitudinal partitions or rails 20 of less height than the cabinets, and passageways are provided between adjacent cabinets in the same row, the ends of the partitions 20 being connected by angularlydisposed rails 22 to the ends of adjacent cabinets, so as to form a continuous path through the store, one end of the path communicating with an inlet 12 and the other with an exit 13. At the opposite end of the store to the inlet and exit is a stock-room 34 having doors 35 opposite to the ends of the partitions 20. One wall of the entrance lobby 10 is formed by a basket rack 32 readily accessible to customers entering the store, and also to the clerk in charge of the laterallydisposed settlement and wrapping department 29, who replaces the baskets handed in by the customers. An office or auditing room 38 is placed adjacent to the inlet and exit and at right-angles to the settlement department, direct admission from the inlet being obtainable through doors 41, 40. The exterior of the office is fitted with display shelving 43. Except for part of the aisle 42 near the inlet, the arrangement is such that goods are displayed on one side only of the continuous path through the store, so that the attention of customers is not distracted, and all the goods displayed come under observation. The tops of the partitions 20, 22 may, however be of sufficient width to support a line of goods such as bottled pickles or the like. One or more of the cabinets may be arranged as a refrigerator 26 having doors 27 opening into adjacent aisles.
