Abstract

1424877 Aqueous drilling muds MONSANTO CO 4 May 1973 [5 May 1972 (2)] 21276/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division E1] An aqueous drilling mud comprising water, clay, and a mixture of (A) from 95 to 20% by weight of the mixture of at least one carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride polymer, and (B) from 5 to 80% by weight of the mixture of at least one water-soluble salt of lead or a metal of Groups Ib, IIb, VIb, VIIb and VIII of Periodic Table, in which the polymer has a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride content of from 20 to 100 mol. per cent and a solubility in water at a pH of less than 7 of at least 1% by weight at 25‹ C, and in which the solubility of the mixture in water at a pH of less than 7 is at least 1% by weight at 25‹ C. In the examples the muds comprise poly(vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride), polyacrylamide, zinc acetate, bentonite, manganese formate, nickel acetate, chromium acetate, cupric acetate, cobaltous acetate, lead acetate, poly(ethylenemaleic anhydride), soda ash, calcium hydroxide, poly(vinyl methyl ether-maleic anhydride) and polyacrylic acid.
