Abstract

1424039 Ion-exchange KANEBO Ltd and NIPPON KYNOL Inc 22 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972 24 Feb 1972 26 Feb 1972] 8811/73 Heading B1J [Also in Divisions B5 and C1] A hollow ion-exchange filament comprises an external tubular portion surrounding a hollow core, the tubular portion comprising a fibre-forming polymer containing a major proportion of a cured novolak resin, and having a cross-sectional area occupying from 20 to 90% of the total cross-sectional area of the filament, especially 40 to 70% thereof. The fibre-forming polymer may comprise more than 50% by weight of a novolak resin and less than 50% by weight of a fibre-forming thermoplastic synthetic resin, e.g. a polyamide, polyester, polyesterether, polyolefine or polyurethane. The filaments are made by treating a filament consisting of a fibre-forming polymer containing a major proportion of an uncured novolak resin composition, with a curing reagent in the presence of a curing catalyst to cure the filament from the peripheral portion to a depth of 20-90% especially 40-70% of the cross-sectional area of the filament, and thereafter removing the uncured core portion of said filament by extraction with a solvent, and introducing an ion-exchangeable group e.g. sulphonic acid, carboxyl, ammonium, primary, secondary or tertiary amino, quaternary ammonium, hydroxyl or halogen into the hollow filament so made. Thus the hollow filament may be heat-treated with a sulphonating agent, a carboxyl group introduced by reacting the filament with a carboxyl-group containing halide, lactone or oxyacid, or reacting with an amino acid ester at a temperature of at least 80‹C and then hydrolysing the reaction product with an alkali. Amino groups may be introduced by treatment with a haloalkylation agent followed by treatment with an amination agent, suitably at 100-180‹C. Haloalkylation agents preferred include monohalo-alkyl ethers and dihaloalkyl ethers, each containing a C 1 to C 4 alkyl residue. Amination agents include ammonia, C 1 to C 4 monoalkylamines, C 1 to C 4 monoalkanolamines, C 2 to C 8 dialkylamines, C 2 to C 8 dialkanolamines, C 3 to C 12 trialkylamines, C 3 to C 12 trialkanolamines, C 2 to C 9 polyalkylenepolyamines and N-alkyl substituted products thereof. In Examples, the filaments are packed into vertical glass columns and used for various ion-exchange processes.
