Abstract

1423848 Making universal joints NADELLA and A PITNER 9 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 22011/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A Hookes joint fork 1 is formed from a substantially rhombic sheet metal blank 2, by bending up at right angles the two triangular corner portions 4 at the ends of the long diagonal to form the fork arms 3, each arm having a hole 13 for a trunnion bearing. Between the arms the remaining portion 6 may have two or four fixing bolt holes 7 and/or a a central boss, spigot or hole to locate the fork on a shaft. Extending from the central hole in which the shaft is axially slidable, a shaft engaging sleeve may comprise part of the blank or a separate part, Figs. 8 to 10 (not shown), Bolts through the holes 7 may attach the fork to a resilient disc connected at circumferentially spaced points to the respective shaft. This joint may be at one end of a propellor shaft, Fig. 11 (not shown).
