Abstract

1423708 Fibre-reinforced polyolefin compositions MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 16 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23394/73 Heading C3P Glass fibre-reinforced polyolefin compositions are prepared by a process which comprises mixing (A) 5 to 70 weight per cent of surface pretreated glass fibres, (B) at least 1 weight per cent of a modified polyolefin which comprises functional groups reactive with the glass fibre and (C) an unmodified polyolefin, more than 50 weight per cent of the (B) particles having a diameter of less than 100 microns and more than 50 weight per cent of the (C) particles having a diameter of more than 200 microns. The glass fibres may be treated with a silane coupling agent. The polyolefin may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, hexene-1, 4-methylpentene- 1 or styrene; and may be modified by random, block or graft copolymerization with a monomer containing carbonyl, amino, epoxy, hydroxyl, nitrile, sulphonyl, sulphinyl, halogen or phosphoric groups. Mixing may be effected by premixing (A) and (B), by precoating (A) with a solution of (B), or by mixing (A) with a powder of (B) of particle size less than 100 microns and a powder of (C) of particle size greater than 200 microns. Examples describe compositions of glass wool pretreated with γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane together with polypropylene and (1-4, 9-16 and 22) glycidyl methacrylate modified polypropylene, (17) acrylic acid modified polypropylene and (18) maleic anhydride modified polypropylene; with ethylene/propylene block copolymer and (5-8) glycidyl methacrylate modified polypropylene and (21) acrylic acid modified ethylene/propylene block copolymer; and with polyethylene and (19 and 20) glycidyl methacrylate modified polyethylene.
