Abstract

1423340 Valves; antiskid braking systems MULLARD Ltd 11 May 1973 [19 June 1972] 28586/72 Headings F2V and F2F An antiskid vehicle braking system includes a solenoid valve mechanism 1 having means to prevent displacement of the solenoid armature 14 for antiskid operation should there be a large fluid leakage past valve member 16 and through orifice 31. Valve member 16 is normally biased to the closed position by a spring 37 and is surrounded with axial and radial clearance by armature 14 carrying an 0-ring 29 which in the unenergized state seals a region 30<SP>1</SP> bounding orifice 31 under the action of biasing spring 15 bearing on slidable member 33. The clearance around valve member 16 permits the pressures upstream of the latter and within region 30<SP>1</SP> to equalize providing the valve member is fully closing orifice 31. If however there is substantial leakage through orifice 31, e.g. owing to trapped dirt, then the pressure differential across valve member 16 is too great to permit armature 14 to cause further opening of the latter when windings 13 are energized by an antiskid signal. Consequently the fluid pressure at brake 10 is not relieved. During normal operation an antiskid signal causes armature 14 to move leftwards into abutment with valve member 16, opening the latter and causing braking pressure to be relieved through orifice 31 to line 17. The thus-displaced fluid flows from line 17 into a reservoir 19 causing spring- loaded piston 20 to move leftwards so that stem 21 enters pressure line 12 to reduce the flow to brake 10 from master cylinder 2. When valve member 16 is open the flow through mechanism 1 is from inlet port 40, through axial and radial passages 41, 42 in armature 14 and thence through ports 39 in slidable member 33 to orifice 31. The flow through ports 39 produces a pressure differential urging member 33 and armature 14 rightwards until an equilibrium position is reached. Spring 15 is weak compared with spring 37. In modifications (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) the positions of springs 15, 37 and of members 33 are altered. The braking system also includes a fail-safe arrangement 5, wheel movement sensor 6, electronic control circuit 7 and scavenging pump 9.
