Abstract
1423295 Cryogenic tanks BRIDGESTONE LIQUEFIED GAS CO Ltd 12 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 11857/73 Heading F4P A method of constructing a membrane-type cryogenic tank comprises forming an inner membrane vessel 5 in two parts which have overlapping side wall portions 5b, bulging out the corners and edges of the bottom and top panel portions 5a, 5c in directions P 1 , P 2 so as to cancel out the overlap, and finally welding the edges of the two portions 5b along a seam A whilst maintaining the corners and edges in their bulged condition. Since the overlap is dimensioned to compensate for contraction of the vessel in use, the corners and edges are outwardly stressed at normal temperature so that they become substantially unstressed at low operating temperatures. A second membrane vessel 4 surrounds the vessel 5 and is also formed of two parts having side portions 4b with edges in opposed relation. Bulging forces in directions P 1 and P 3 pull the edges apart to create a gap BC through which welding and inspection of seam A in vessel 5 can be effected from the outside. After the vessel 5 has been completed, a band 16 is welded along seams B and C to close the gap. The vessel 4 is thus also formed with pre-stressing at normal temperature. After vessels 4, 5 have been completed hydraulic jacks 15 are inserted between an outer rigid vessel, such as the hull 1, 2 of a tanker ship, and a protecting plate 13 laid against each side wall of vessel 4. These jacks 15 maintain the vessels 4, 5 spaced from the hull 1, 2 such as to preserve the previously obtained pre-stressing of vessels 4, 5 whilst the space between hull 1, 2 and plate 13 is filled with heat insulation 3, each jack 15 being removed when the insulation has reached its level and solidified. The insulation may be a bed of foamed sulphur mixed with foaming concrete as a binding agent, such material being further strengthened by glass wool or pearlite if desired. Vessels 4, 5 are made of thin plates of a low temperature resisting material such as nickel steel, stainless steel, aluminium, &c.
