Abstract

1422730 Moulding polyvinyl chloride articles ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 17 April 1973 [22 April 1972] 18507/73 Heading B5A To form a PVC article, e.g. a cushion cover, a thixotropic plastigel is sprayed on to a heated (room temperature-100‹ C.) mould surface 12, the viscosity of the plastigel at the moment of spraying being 20,000-50,000 cps., and being such that it will reach at least 140,000 cps. after 48 hrs standing. A cloth strip 15 to be incorporated into the cover is held in the mould by a member which leaves the edges 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> uncovered, and the plastigel is sprayed into the mould to cover the mould surface and the free edges 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> to a depth of 1-1À5 mm. The resulting layer is gelled and baked at 300-320‹ C. before removal from the mould. Also described is a masking technique to provide a cover having areas of differently coloured PVC. A textile or fibrous reinforcement may be incorporated into the PVC layer, e.g. by laying a preformed sheet or sprinking fibres. The cover may be filled with a foamable polyurethane while it is still in the mould 10 to provide a complete cushion.
