Abstract

1422325 Sizing extruded tubes BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 12 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2666/72 Headings B5A and B5B A circular or other section thermoplastics tube 1, is downwardly extruded from a die 2 and sized in being drawn, by nip rolls, around a plurality of spaced apart edges of a sizing member, during internal cooling by circulating liquid, e.g. deaerated water, admitted between the lower edge and a seal 5 and flowing upwardly through peripheral perforations through the member, to a level thereabove at which it is withdrawn and between which and the die 2 a supporting air pressure is maintained within the tube 1. The edges may be machined from a single block of material, but preferably are defined, Fig. 1, by discs spaced by smaller diameter baffle discs 4, between an upper one of which (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), and a lower nut, they are threadedly clamped to a tube 6 passing through the die. The supporting air is admitted at a controlled pressure, e.g. regulated by proximity sensitive devices, via a pipe 13, and is vented between the tube 6 and the die mandrel. The cooling water is admitted below the discs at openings 10, from between a tube 7 and a tube 11, and is withdrawn above the discs by suction, at openings 29, into a passage between the tube 6 and the tube 7. The extruding tube 1 is externally cooled by a liquid 3, against the pressure of which it is internally supported by a pressurized gas admitted below the seal 5, via a tube 11 and opening 12. The tubes 6-11 are supported to the die by spiders. The extruding tube 1 may comprise numerous specified thermoplastics. The sizing discs have bevelled edges, and the sizing and baffle discs may comprise stainless steel or brass, or filled or unfilled polytetrafluoroethylene or polychlorotrifluoroethylene. The seal 5 may comprise rubber, leather and rubber, and may include the means of Specification 1,106,994, or may comprise steel, and may comprise a plurality of, e.g. flexible and rigid, elements. Within the bath 3, cooling liquid may circulate through a sleeve surrounding the extruding tube 1. In the Fig. 3 embodiment, two seals 5 and 15 are provided, with any cooling liquid passing the seal being removed by suction applied at passages 16, 18. The examples relate to the extrusion of tubes of polypropylene of À050 inch wall thickness, and low density polyethylene of À010 inch wall thickness.
