Abstract
1422303 Ethylene dichloride STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 19 Feb 1974 [11 June 1973] 7485/74 Heading C2C Ethylene dichloride is produced by introducing ethylene 2 and chlorine 1 into a reaction zone 5 of increased pressure containing a circulating liquid medium comprising chlorinated hydrocarbons containing two carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof, and maintained at a temperature below the vaporization point of the medium at the pressure in the reaction zone to form crude liquid ethylene dichloride; passing the crude liquid ethylene dichloride with, and as part of, the circulating medium to a zone of reduced pressure 9 maintained at a pressure and temperature at which at least a portion of the circulating liquid medium is vaporized by means of the heat of reaction of the chlorine and the ethylene, passing the vaporized impure ethylene dichloride 10 to a rectification zone and rectifying the ethylene dichloride-containing vapour by means of the heat of reaction of the chlorine and ethylene, recovering purified ethylene dichloride from the rectification zone ; while simultaneously returning the circulating liquid medium from the zone of reduced pressure to the reaction zone. The circulating medium preferably comprises a major portion of 1,2- dichloroethane or 1,1,2-trichloroethane. Fractionation zone 9 may also be supplied with an ethylene dichloride-containing stream through line 20 from the ethylene dichloride pyrolysis zone 21 and chlorinated in 23 to convert chloroprene and trichloroethylene to heavy-boiling chlorinated compounds. Alternatively ethylene dichloride may be introduced by line 24 from an oxychlorination zone 25.
