Abstract

1422199 Step-by-step lifting devices D V H JOHANSSON 30 April 1973 [4 May 1972] 20387/73 Heading B8J A device for lifting or lowering loads step-bystep has four similar upstanding U-beams 2 combined in pairs with cross-beams 8 which carry a load supporting beam 7. Each U-beam 2 has an hydraulic jack 1 co-operating with supporting plates 9, 10 which can be slid into opposed, horizontal grooves 6 in the flanges of the U -beam 2. The abutment surface of each groove 6 is inclined slightly downwards with respect to its opposed groove 6, the co-operating portions of the plates 9, 10 having a corresponding chamfer. The plate 9 is plain and is arranged to support the base portion of the jack 1 while the plate 10 has a cut-out so that it may be slipped around lifting section 4 of the jack 1 under the head thereof. In a method of lifting a load the device is used in the manner of a conventional step-by-step climbing jack, each jack 1 being received centrally within the confines of its associated U-beam 2. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the plates 9, 10 are provided with jaws (19), (20) to engage the grooves 6 and may be sprang-loaded or operated by a piston and cylinder arrangement. In this embodiment it is not necessary for the operator to remove and replace the plates 9, 10 as the load is moved step-by-step.
