Abstract

1421958 Coating of Al and its alloys SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 13 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 28198/73 Heading C7F A continuous Al or Al-based alloy is prepared for soldering by passing it into and out of a molten bath consisting of a molten metal including from 0.005-0.2 wt per cent Ga, and disrupting the surface oxide skin on the continuous material either immediately prior to, or during, immersion in said bath. The coating metal may be Zn, Sn, Pb, Cd or alloys based on one of these; the bath temperature may be 460-480‹C. The oxide film may be disrupted by abrading, brushing or stretching. As shown, Al strip is wound from reel 11 over roller 12 and passes over bars 14 and 15 which are either stationary or move at a different rate to the strip, to disrupt the oxide coating; bars 14 and 15 may be heated to prevent the bath thereto, and one of the bars may be omitted in which case the coating adheres only to one side of the strip. Wiper rolls 21 determine the thickness of the coating, which solidifies on contact with air-cooled roller 18 prior to coiling of the strip at 20.
