Abstract
1421783 Automatic ventilator H G EAST & CO Ltd 26 Oct 1973 [4 Nov 1972] 50916/72 Heading A5T An automatic ventilator includes a gas input line 10, at least one flexible expandable container 15 or 16 communicating with said input line, a constraint 17 limiting the expansion of said container, a gas output line 13 and a pressure responsive valve 12 interconnecting said lines and responsive to the gas pressures in the lines to open to pass gas to the output line 13 and to close to permit exhalation &c by a patient. A valve device 26 is provided in the output line 13 to pass gas to an inspiration port 27 and from an expiration port 28 to atmosphere and to avoid inspiratory and expiratory flow in a common line. The device also has a vent port 29 open to atmosphere. The gas input line 10 is connected to the output line 13 via the pressure responsive valve 12 and a filter 11. The pressure responsive valve 12 operates to remain closed while the line 13 vents to atmosphere until the pressure in the input line 10 reaches a specified value and remains open until the pressures in the input and output lines 10 and 13 are substantially equal. The specified pressure at which the valve opens is adjustable by means of collar 25. The inspiration port 27 is coupled to the output line 13 through a one way valve 30 which permits flow from 13 to 27. A diaphragm valve 31 uses the pressure in the output line 13 to control communication between the expiration port 28 and the vent port 29, closing across the expiration port when the pressure in the line 13 increases upon opening of the pressure responsive valve. The ventilator is both pressure and volume limited, the pressure limit being set by adjustment of the pressure responsive valve 12 and the volume limit being set by the volume of the bag 15, the minimum volume that the ventilator can deliver per cycle. In an alternative embodiment, two expansible containers are provided, the second also having a constraint 17 and communicating with the input line 10 through a flow control valve 20. In this case the volume of bag 16 at the moment of opening of valve 12 is included in the volume limit.
