Abstract
1421563 Mixing apparatus M L BARD 9 July 1973 32522/73 Heading B1C An immersion mixer has an impeller 18 offset (see Fig. 2, not shown) from the axis of the container 12; a pump 20 in conjunction with pipes 21-24 and three-way valves 25A-C enables liquid to be circulated from the periphery to the centre of the container or vice versa, to control the vortex created by the impeller. The impeller comprises a disc 30 with peripheral teeth 31, 32 mounted in a hollow shaft 17 between upper and lower plates 39, 45 shaped to provide an annular passage between them of venturiform cross-section. Arcuate blades B in each side of the disc 30 cause material to be drawn in axially and ejected between the plates 39, 45. Arcuate curved plates 41, 46 form tapering feeding chambers 42; material enters the wider, leading ends and passes through graduated apertures 40, 47 into the annular passage. Gas (e.g. air) may be supplied from the hollow shaft 17 through the passages P. P<SP>1</SP>. In another embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown) the disc and plates may be thick enough to accommodate internal gas passages; gas may be supplied from the hollow shaft through an arm (102) extending between the disc and the upper plate, or through a pipe (115) to the underside of the impeller; and a gas/liquid mixture may be supplied to the underside of the impeller through a pipe (111) and heat exchanger (114).
