Abstract

1421271 Protecting metal surfaces by coating INTERNATIONAL NICKEL LTD 6 March 1973 [13 March 1972 20 Nov 1972] 10702/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] A refractory metal, e.g. Fe, steel or Cu-, Ti-, Ni- or Cobase alloys is protected by a coating of alkali metal oxide silica and oxidised Cr formed by oxidation in situ on the metal surface. Cr and an aqueous alkali-stabilised silica sol may be applied to the surface separately or simultaneously e.g. Cr may be electroplated or the surface may be chromised or a slurry of Cr particles and a silica sol may be applied. The silica sol may be aqueous or contain glycols, alcohols, resins or other polymerisable materials (many examples are described) or wetting agents or preservatives e.g. sodium phenate or chlorophenate. The Cr-silica slurry may also contain alumina, magnesia, lime, bentonite, Al, Fe or Ni, or yttrium oxide. The coated surface is heated in oxygen to at least 800‹C.
