Abstract

1421012 Coagulating natural rubber latex ASHLAND OIL Inc 28 March 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 14993/73 Headings C3E and C3Q Natural rubber crumb is produced from latex by heating the latex to a temperature above 50‹ C., thereafter or simultaneously contacting the latex with an acid capable of coagulating the latex and subjecting the latex and acid to mechanical agitation and comminution for a period of time sufficient to form the crumb. Carbon black may be added to the latex prior to contact with the acid and additives which may also be incorporated at this stage include cationic coagulating agents, e.g. polyamines, antioxidants and extender oils. Examples are given in which (a) latex is heated to 60‹ to 70‹ C. with steam before or while being coagulated with sulphuric acid in a coagulator comprising rotating agitating and chopping means and (b) latex and carbon black slurry are fed to a coagulator, heated with steam to 60‹ to 65‹ C. and coagulated with formic acid, the coagulator being as in (a) or a similar device.
