Abstract

1420104 Ignition timing ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 19 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 2812/73 Heading F1B An I.C. engine has an ignition timing system for reducing pollution from the engine during warm-up comprising first and second vacuum-operated adjusting boxes 25, 26 for sensing pressures in the engine induction system, the adjusting boxes being connected by an adjusting rod 24 to an adjusting plate of an ignition distributor 23 of the engine, the box 25 being operable to displace the rod 24 to retard the ignition in a first operating range of the engine in response to pressure reduction in the box 25 and the box 26 being operable to displace the rod 24 in the reverse direction to advance the ignition in response to a pressure reduction in the second adjusting box in a second operating range of the engine, the maximum rod travel in the retarding direction being variable by means of a stop 27 whose position depends on the engine temperature. Switch 30 is closed during heating of the engine exhaust system and opens when. it reaches operating temperature, closure of this switch actuating an electromagnet 29 to withdraw the stop 27 from recess 28 to allow rod 24 greater movement, valve 33 to provide a by-pass from upstream of throttle valve 34 to inlet manifold 32 and valve 31 to connect box 25 to manifold 32 and box 26 to location 36 adjacent the throttle valve. When the exhaust system has reached operating temperature, switch 30 opens allowing stop 27 to engage recess 28, valve 33 to close and valve 31 to connect box 25 to location 37 and box 26 to location 36. The engagement of stop 27 in recess 28 limits ignition retardation to about 5 degrees after TDC, but when the stop is withdrawn during warm-up, maximum retardation can be in the range 10 degrees to 25 degrees after TDC. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the stop 27 and valve 33 are actuated by vacuum boxes (42), (45). In Figs. 10 and 14 (not shown) the vacuum advance/retard unit has three boxes (51), (52), (53), the box (53) acting to control the position of a stop to limit movement of rod 24 in dependence upon the position of switch 30, responsive to exhaust system temperature.
