Abstract

1420069 Separating components of a gas mixture BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 19 Jan 1973 [15 Feb 1972] 6977/72 Heading F4P [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] Apparatus for separating a helium/oxygen gas mixture comprises a pipe 2 feeding the mixture into a vessel 4 located in a liquid nitrogen reservoir 6, whereby the oxygen is liquefied and drawn off by a pipe 8 at the bottom of vessel 4, and the gaseous helium is drawn off by a pipe 10 at the top of vessel 4. To ensure adequate separation of the gas and liquid, a capillary tube 16 extends vertically in the vessel and leads to a Katharometer 18 which monitors the liquid level by measuring the thermal conductivity of the gas reaching the Katharometer. If this gas is helium, a valve 12 in the oxygen outlet pipe 8 is automatically closed until the meter 18 senses oxygen vapour. In a modification a second capillary tube extends from the upper half of the vessel 4 to the gas analyser to define an upper limit for the helium/oxygen interface.
