Abstract

1419744 Cutting inserts CARMET CO 26 Feb 1974 [15 March 1973] 8654/74 Heading B3B A cutting insert comprises a body of hard material having parallel top and bottom faces 14, 16 and et least three sides 18 normal to and extending between said faces, at least one of said faces having a series of recesses extending along each edge, each said recess having an outer recess surface 24 of substantially constant width extending inwardly at a substantially constant angle normal to the edge, and an inner recess surface 26 of variable width extending from the inner edge of said outer recess surface 24 at a substantially constant angle to intersect with said face, the outer edge of said outer recess surface 24 being inclined from the end of an associated side in a straight line toward the centre of said side. A three-sided and a foursided insert are disclosed. The inserts include a centre hole to receive a screw clamp arrangement (12) (Fig. 1, not shown) which clamps the insert and a shim (8) into a pocket (4) of a tool holder. The tool holder pocket (4) is angled to provide positive rake cutting, but neutral or negative rake cutting can be done. Each side 18 may have a pair of recesses extending from opposite ends to form a continuous groove 22 around the periphery of the insert.
